As a continuation of the prior page, I have compiled excerpts most relevant to the topic of arts-based research from Liz Lerman's 2011 book Hiking the Horizontal, Field Notes from a Choreographer.

The excerpts include vignettes entitled Asking Questions as a Way of Life, Defense of Creative Research, Seven Paths to Creativity, and A Return to Inquiry.

Following our class discussion questioning the need for textual accompaniment in dance presentation around arts-based research, I also included a set of program notes from Lerman's arguably two most famous commissioned performances, Ferocious Genome and Small Dances, Big Ideas.

ENJOY!!!

Scientists from around the world use dance-based research as a way both to explore their experience as researchers and as means for representing their field of inquiry. Dance creates a language of understanding for realms of knowledge otherwise inaccessible to most.
